Faculty Guild

The goal of this group is to bring together academics, as it was done ~800 years ago when universities were first founded, to meet, converse, learn from each other, share ideas and project the results to the wider community. It is a joyful gathering with a positive outlook.  A community of like-minded individuals pursuing truth. Yes, we are all pretty busy. Perhaps too busy.  We follow the idea of leisure according to philosopher Josef Piper:

True leisure is an active state of mind that involves contemplation, reflection, and the pursuit of higher things. It is not simply a passive state of relaxation but rather a purposeful engagement with the world.

The Guild is an opportunity to journey towards virtue and human flourishing, both personal and that of our students and colleagues

Desert

Meet

Agathon organizes quarterly meetings of faculty in which we come together to actually enjoy being with other academics.

The format at times includes wine and cheese, and members take turns to present on any topic we care to talk about in an informal, friendly environment.

Learn

We have a wide range of expertise, a rich intellectual community free to speak its mind about any and all subjects. A fertile ground for personal growth in which new faculty may find comfort and advice.

Desert Road

Unwind

The goal is not intellectual work.

"The highest form of knowledge comes to man like a gift... it comes effortlessly" J. Pieper

"The end and the norm of discipline, is happiness" St. Thomas Aquinas

"...absurdly happy, completely fearless and in constant trouble". W.B.

"For we let our young men and women go out unarmed, in a day when armour was never so necessary. By teaching them all to read, we have left them at the mercy of the printed word. By the invention of the film and the radio, we have made certain that no aversion to reading shall secure them from the incessant battery of words, words, words. They do not know what the words mean; they do not know how to ward them off or blunt their edge or fling them back; they are a prey to words in their emotions instead of being the masters of them in their intellects."
