Western New York
About Us
The Agathon Institute is an independent, nonprofit organization dedicated to providing educational opportunities for high school and college students in the Western New York region. It is formed by a group of academics and professionals that believe in the central role of the Liberal Arts in the formation of men and women of character, ready to address the challenges of the modern world. Our programs seek to introduce students to great intellectual traditions, to help them cultivate their minds and to foster "a noble and courteous bearing in the conduct of life"(J.H.Newman). We believe that our society needs individuals with "the desire to challenge themselves and others to strive for great things, with the willingness to overcome selfishness and to serve others."(A.Havard)
In order to pursue the good (agathon), individuals must use their well informed reason, understand first principles and question mainstream assumptions.

Resplendent and unfading is Wisdom, and she is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her; one who watches for her at dawn will not be disappointed, for she will be found sitting at the gate. For setting your heart on her is the perfection of prudence, and whoever keeps vigil for her is quickly free from care.
-Wisdom 6:12-15
